Bermuda, Day #1
Excitement and apprehension all around leading up to the packing and departure from campus. 5:45 AM… barely awake and cranky; off we go! Of course, 15 minutes into the ride to Logan we find a sea of red lights and the 45 minute ride has the potential to be hours. Dueling traffic apps sending us towards the Pike and more brake lights but we continue to get closer and closer. 15 minutes away and now our flight is delayed 15 minutes, decreasing a little anxiety and as we pull in to the airport we see our flight delayed 90 minutes. The delay leads to coffee and snacks from Dunk’s and preparation to board as all of our seats are changed due to the plane being a larger model.
Once we departed it was a relatively easy flight and less than two hours later, we hit the ground running. Few people waiting to clear customs and our luggage was already waiting. Two cabs hailed and off to BIOS! A quick meeting with Claire and we packed our lunches in order to take the couple mile walk to Whalebone Bay to test our snorkel gear. The walk along the old rail trail was easier than expected (especially since we had beautiful views). The group had a great snorkel and saw all kinds of fish and other wildlife but began to tire after an hour or so. We packed up and headed back for showers and dinner.
Dinner was absolutely amazing and our chef outdid himself with the curried lentils, chicken, and fish. Full bellies and some quick cleaning before our lecture with Alex in the Riker Room. The students were in full participation mode and came with lots of previous knowledge. Walking around the beautiful property in the evening warmth tired some out and a few were ready for bed after the long day. Everyone enjoyed some traditional Bermudian snacks with Barrit’s Ginger Beer while sitting out on the porch. A long but fun-filled day! Looking forward to what to tomorrow brings!
